Littoraria angulifera or the mangrove periwinkle is a species of sea snaila marine gastropod mollusc in the family Littorinidaethe winkles.

The color varies from slaty-brown through reddish brown to orange, dull yellow and off white. The smaller whorls have white spots near their edges and also some darker streaks which fuse together on the largest whorl.

It is also found in the eastern Atlantic between Senegal and Angola.

Littoraria angulifera

Littoraria angulifera is a herbivore and browses on fungi and algae growing on the mangroves. Littoraria angulifera is ovoviviparous.

Fertilized eggs are brooded inside the periwinkle and the veliger larvae are then released and become planktonic. After about 9 weeks these develop into pediveliger larvae which undergo metamorphosis and settle.

Littoraria angulifera is used as a zootherapeutical product for the treatment of chesty cough and shortness of breath in traditional Brazilian medicine in the Northeast of Brazil. These snails feed on the thin film of algae, epiphytes, fungi, diatoms and leaf epidermis of these mangroves. Within this genus, Littoraria aberrans is the only ovoviviparous species with an intracapsular metamorphosis.

Species Species in the genus Littoraria include: Littorina is a genus of small sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the family Littorinidae, the winkles or periwinkles. Overview Anatomy of Littorina In Europe there are about nine species in this genus, one of which is the rough periwinkle, Littorina saxatilis Olivi, Another closely related supposed species Littorina tenebrosa Montagu was thought to be distinct because of its different ecological requirements, but current studies have shown that it is not at all clear whether the two are indeed separate species or whether L.

Distribution The periwinkles are found on the seashore in the littoral zone and sublittoral zone in all parts of the world. In the Baltic they live within the influence of freshwater, and frequently become distorted in consequ Seashore wildlife habitats exist from the Tropics to the Arctic and Antarctic.

Seashores and beaches provide varied habitats in different parts of the world, and even within the same beach. Phytoplankton is at the bottom of some food chains, while zooplankton and other organisms eat phytoplankton.

Kelp is also autotrophic and at the bottom of many food chains. Coastal areas are stressed through rapid changes, for example due to tides. Description The white shell has a bulimiform or subglobose shape. It is polished, without epidermis or nacre, variegated with bright colors.

The heavy operculum is calcareous, internally paucispiral, with a nucleus angjlifera the basal margin. It is externally convex. The columella is smooth, arcuate and not dentate.

The animal has long tentacles, and has usually pectinated head lobes. These frontal lobes distinguish this genus from Tricolia, which lacks frontal lobes. The epipodial line contains generally cirrhi.

The branchial plume is long. The narrow foot is long, pointed posteriorly, rounded before. Below it is divided longitudinally by a median groove. The rhomboidal jaws are covered with imbricating scales. The radula is rather short. These sea snails occur in rivers and streams, in estuaries and in the sea, on sand, silt and stones, brackish ponds and mangroves.

They are semiglobular, with 3 or 4 whorls. The aperture is oval, with thin The list of marine molluscs of Brazil is a partial list of saltwater species that form a part of the molluscan fauna of Brazil. This list does not include the land or freshwater molluscs.
